The Best Supermini
Reading my latest copy of my favourite Car magazine, I was intrigued to read about the new Clio TCE 90 Evolution in its basic guise.
The basic version comes in at £17,995 sporting a revvy 999 cc turbocharged three-cylinder engine hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission and front wheel drive. ‘Basic’ features include alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric windows, and even such fripperies as auto windscreen wipers and Car-Play integration. That is quite some definition of ‘Basic.’
The car was pitched against some stiff competition in a group test which included the Hyundai i10 N-Line, and the Mini Cooper C Classic. And although several cars in the group roundly beat the Clio on the 0-60 dash and top speed, with the MINI recording a 0-62 in 7.7 seconds and a terminal velocity of 139 mph (0-62 in 12.2 seconds and a 112 top end for the French contender to the throne) it was the Clio that won the accolade as the best supermini on sale today.
Seeing the Clio being tested by Autocar on YouTube and shading victory against the Suzuki Swift, sealed what seems to be a unanimous decision amongst the motoring press experts. And it was no trouble at all finding a plethora of other YouTube and car magazine testers all coming to the same conclusion. Just about everybody came to that decision for what is a winning formula, a tempting price, all-round practicality and the sheer sense of unbridled fun.
